MACOMB COUNTY, MI – Sierra Pearl Zaitona, 29, was sentenced to decades in prison for the 2023 starvation death of her 2-year-old son, a case that has drawn widespread attention due to the heartbreaking circumstances. Zaitona entered a no-contest plea to charges of second-degree murder and second-degree child abuse, resulting in a sentence of 24 to 50 years.
The tragic events unfolded when Zaitona and Jonathon Matthew Cheek, 26, the biological parents of the toddler, called 911 after discovering their son unresponsive in March 2023. An ensuing autopsy confirmed the child had died of starvation. Cheek faced identical charges and made a plea deal with prosecutors in October 2024.
