UPPER TOWNSHIP, NJ – Authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with the death of 21-year-old Emily Cruddas, initially believed to be a suicide due to a drug overdose last year. After an extensive investigation, Cruddas’ sister, Sarah Errickson, 36, along with her boyfriend, Joseph Ragan, 22, have been charged with murder and conspiracy.
In February 2023, New Jersey State Police responded to a call about an overdose on East Sunrise Road, finding Cruddas unresponsive. Despite efforts from emergency personnel, she was declared dead at the scene. At first glance, the circumstances suggested a suicide, especially considering Cruddas’ recent history of a suicide attempt following a miscarriage, leaving both law enforcement and family in shock.
However, the case took a turn when Ragan approached police a month later, providing a chilling confession. Ragan revealed that he and Errickson had administered a lethal injection to Cruddas while she was unconscious. According to Ragan, after Cruddas returned home from the hospital, Errickson prepared a concoction of heroin laced with fentanyl, injecting it into her sister’s hand while making a sinister remark, allegedly as Ragan restrained Cruddas.
This critical information prompted authorities to reclassify the manner of death as “undetermined.” As the investigation progressed, a significant breakthrough came in April with the discovery of a backpack containing heroin identical to the batch found beside Cruddas’ body.
