46-year-old West Virginia woman shot in the chest by husband who said he was tired of fighting with her

SISSONVILLE, WV – In the quiet pre-dawn darkness of Sissonville, gunfire shattered the silence Saturday morning, leading to the arrest of a man accused of murdering his wife inside their family home.

Authorities charged Jason Joe Phillips, 46, with first-degree murder after he allegedly shot and killed his wife, Joanna Lynn Phillips, also 46, in a violent domestic dispute that ended in tragedy. The fatal incident unfolded shortly before 3 a.m., when Phillips made a chilling call to 911, telling the dispatcher that he had shot his wife in their kitchen.

Deputies from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office responded swiftly to the scene following the emergency call. When they arrived, they found Joanna Phillips deceased from a single shotgun wound to her chest. Jason Phillips reportedly met the deputies at the door and surrendered without resistance. He told authorities in stark terms that his wife had “pushed him to the limit,” according to statements in the arrest documents.

Investigators revealed that this was not the first time law enforcement had been called to the Phillips residence. Court records show a troubling history of domestic strife, with Jason Phillips previously facing charges related to domestic violence against his wife.

In December 2021, police intervened after Joanna Phillips reported that her husband had pressed a gun to her head and struck her, threatening to end her life. Despite the severity of the incident, charges of domestic assault, battery, and brandishing a firearm were dismissed in March 2022.

The pattern of violence continued into this year. In March, Joanna Phillips again sought help from police, alleging that her husband had physically assaulted her after the couple returned home from a night out. Jason Phillips faced a domestic battery charge stemming from the encounter and was awaiting a bench trial set for January 2026.

Neighbors say the couple had lived in the area for years, but few could have predicted such a devastating conclusion to what appeared to be a tumultuous relationship behind closed doors. The early-morning shooting has rattled the Sissonville community, drawing attention to the ongoing crisis of domestic violence.

Phillips was taken into custody shortly after deputies arrived at the scene on Saturday. He remains held without bond at the South Central Regional Jail. Court records show he is next scheduled to appear before a judge on December 29 to answer the charge of first-degree murder.

Joanna Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene, her life ending where, just hours earlier, the familiar routines of a family home would have unfolded. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the deadly confrontation.
