Austin, Texas – A Texas state senator criticized Governor Greg Abbott for not acknowledging the two-year anniversary of a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. The shooting at Robb Elementary School resulted in the tragic deaths of 19 students and two teachers.
State Senator Roland Gutierrez, a Democrat representing Uvalde, expressed his disappointment over the governor’s silence on the anniversary of the shooting. He took to social media to call out Governor Abbott for failing to mention the tragic event.
The governor’s social media accounts and press releases did not make any reference to the Uvalde shooting, leaving many concerned about the lack of recognition for the victims and their families. Gutierrez highlighted the significance of remembering such a tragic event and criticized the governor for not acknowledging it publicly.
Following the shooting in May 2022, law enforcement faced criticism for delaying their response to the gunman, ultimately resulting in the loss of lives. Family members of the victims filed a lawsuit against state law enforcement, alleging that troopers did not act in accordance with their training.
A Justice Department report further revealed that lives could have been saved if law enforcement had not hesitated in confronting the shooter. An ongoing criminal investigation into the law enforcement response is underway, with officials being summoned to testify in front of a grand jury in Uvalde County.
In response to the shooting, Governor Abbott implemented safety measures in schools, including a requirement for armed guards on every campus. The incident served as a catalyst for discussions surrounding gun violence prevention and school safety in Texas, prompting a reevaluation of existing security protocols.
As the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragic event, the need for improved emergency response protocols and increased vigilance in safeguarding schools remains a pressing concern for residents of Uvalde and lawmakers alike.
