Ambush Shooter Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Killing Baltimore Police Officer

Baltimore, Maryland – A man convicted of the 2021 ambush shooting of a Baltimore police officer and another victim has been sentenced to life without parole. Elliot Knox, 34, received two life sentences without the possibility of parole for the deadly shootings that occurred just hours apart in separate areas of Baltimore. Despite the lack of an established motive, enough evidence was presented during a March trial to convince jurors of Knox’s guilt.

During the sentencing hearing, Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that the sentence sends a clear message that acts of violence will not be tolerated, especially those targeting individuals who serve their communities honorably. Knox’s attorney declined to comment following the sentencing.

The tragic events unfolded when Baltimore police officer Keona Holley was ambushed and killed while sitting in her marked patrol car during an overnight shift. Subsequently, Justin Johnson was also fatally shot while sitting in a parked car. Knox was apprehended after being identified as the owner of a vehicle seen on surveillance footage leaving both crime scenes. While he admitted to some involvement, he implicated another man, Travon Shaw, as the actual shooter, leading to Shaw becoming Knox’s co-defendant.

Shaw, who is serving a life sentence without parole, was previously convicted of murder and other charges related to Johnson’s killing. He later pleaded guilty in Holley’s murder as well. Despite a close friendship between Johnson’s partner and Shaw, investigators found no connection between Knox and either victim.

Holley, a dedicated member of the Baltimore Police Department since 2019, was described by her family as a compassionate and committed individual who sought to make a positive impact in her community. The joint sentencing of Knox and Shaw serves as a form of justice for the families of the victims and sends a strong message about the consequences of violent actions.
