PHOENIX, AZ – The life of 18-year-old Yessenia Norman came to a violent and tragic end after she left her group home facility, where she had been living under the care of the Arizona Department of Child Safety. Friends say that Yessenia, an aspiring college student known for her warmth and kindness, set out on January 15 to meet someone she encountered through a dating app—a decision that would ultimately cost her life.
Norman’s disappearance was quickly noticed by those close to her. When she failed to return, concern mounted, and a missing person report was filed four days later. Efforts to locate the young woman intensified, drawing the attention of local authorities and the broader community.
On January 28, investigators made a heartbreaking discovery in an apartment in Tolleson, a quiet suburb just west of Phoenix. Norman’s body was concealed beneath blankets and towels, and a later examination would reveal that she had suffered nearly 30 stab wounds. The brutality of the act left those who knew her in disbelief and mourning.
According to law enforcement, the apartment was rented to a 27-year-old man named Randal Basilio Santillan. Evidence gathered at the scene and during the investigation pointed to Santillan as the principal suspect. Authorities soon began searching for him, initiating a nationwide manhunt.
Detectives were able to trace Santillan’s route as he fled the state, using a combination of surveillance technology and traffic cameras that captured his vehicle moving through New Mexico, Illinois, and Missouri. The search ultimately led them over 1,600 miles away to Biloxi, Mississippi, where Santillan was apprehended without incident.
Santillan is currently being held in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center as officials arrange for his extradition back to Arizona. He is expected to face charges including first-degree murder and kidnapping, based on the evidence uncovered so far.
Yessenia Norman’s friends and loved ones are grappling with her loss, remembering her for the compassion and optimism she brought into their lives. Tributes circulating on social media and fundraising sites describe her as a nurturing figure, someone who treated her friends’ children as family and who was eager to begin her journey into adulthood.
Norman had recently enrolled in community college, expressing excitement about her future plans and the opportunities ahead of her. Those who knew her stress the void left by her passing, highlighting the potential abruptly snatched away by an act of senseless violence.
Authorities have yet to disclose a motive for the killing. Meanwhile, the community is rallying around Norman’s family, offering support and sharing memories of a promising young woman whose life was taken too soon.
Investigators continue to gather information surrounding the circumstances of Norman’s death. As the legal process unfolds, her community remains focused on honoring her memory and seeking justice on her behalf.
