Arrest: 18-Year-Old Christopher Cooper Charged Following SWAT Standoff in Sedgwick County

WICHITA, Kan. — An 18-year-old was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly assaulting a family member with a rifle and making threats that resulted in a significant police response in Sedgwick County. The incident unfolded in the 2000 block of South Mosley, prompting both a SWAT team and crisis negotiators to intervene.

Just before 1 a.m., a family member dialed 911 to report that Christopher J. Cooper had struck a 42-year-old woman, his stepmother, on the head with a firearm. The victim subsequently sought assistance at a separate location, where she received medical attention for her injuries.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officials gathered information from witnesses who indicated that Cooper had made several concerning remarks, including a threat to engage police in a confrontation. Concerned for everyone’s safety, officers believed the suspect was barricaded inside a detached garage on the property.

Efforts to communicate with Cooper using drones were unsuccessful, and officers quickly escalated their response by activating the SWAT team and negotiating unit. Despite repeated attempts to reach Cooper through loudspeakers, he remained unresponsive.

Once law enforcement received a search warrant for the premises, tactical officers utilized less-lethal measures such as bean bag rounds and a Noise/Flash Diversionary Device (NFDD). These tactics prompted Cooper to emerge from the garage, where he surrendered without further incident after encountering law enforcement officers and a police canine.

The woman involved in the incident was treated at a local hospital for her injuries and has since been released. Following his arrest, Cooper was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. He faces charges that include aggravated assault, use of a deadly weapon, and making criminal threats.

The situation remains under investigation as authorities gather additional details about the events leading up to the confrontation. The police are working to ensure community safety while reflecting on the incident’s impact on the involved family.
