Arrest Made in Connection to 2023 Salt Lake City Homicide That Killed 22-Year-Old

Salt Lake City, Utah – A 23-year-old man, Molitoni Vainuku, was arrested by the Salt Lake City Police Department in relation to the 2023 shooting that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Halapaini Moala. The arrest was made after a thorough investigation that involved collaboration between various law enforcement units.

Detectives from the Gang Unit received crucial information about Vainuku’s whereabouts in West Valley City, leading to his apprehension. The police coordinated efforts with the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and SWAT due to concerns about Vainuku potentially having access to firearms.

Vainuku was taken into custody swiftly and without incident by the VCAT team, as he left his home and attempted to flee in a vehicle. Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown commended the arrest as a significant achievement stemming from a prolonged investigative process.

The initial investigation into the shooting incident on West Market Street began on June 4, 2023, following reports received by the police. The swift response by law enforcement led to the discovery of Moala’s body in a parking lot, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

In response to the case, the Gang Unit and Homicide Squad of the SLCPD intensified their efforts to identify the perpetrator, launching crime suppression patrols and initiating a criminal probe into the nightclub associated with the shooting.
