Arrest Made in Fatal Shooting of USA-Based Nigerian Lecturer in Osun

EJIGBO, Nigeria – Police in Osun confirmed the tragic killing of Dr. Richard Adeoriokin, a Nigerian lecturer based in the United States, at Ejigbo on Saturday. The police spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, stated that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the murder.

The incident occurred after the 50th coronation anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin. It was reported that a civilian guard, named Hammed Jelili, fired his double barrel gun into the air at the instruction of Prince Eniola Oyeyode to test its condition. However, instead of shooting into the air, Jelili aimed directly at Dr. Adeoriokin, causing his tragic death.

Prince Oyeyode has been arrested and detained in connection with the incident. The Commissioner of Police in Osun, Mr. Bzigu Kwazhi, has urged the public, especially residents of Ejigbo, to remain calm as investigations are underway.

Furthermore, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an immediate investigation into the killing, expressing his condolences to the people of Ejigbo. He emphasized the need for law enforcement agencies to uncover the causes of the incident and ensure that justice is served. Governor Adeleke also called for preemptive action by security agencies to prevent any possible retaliation or violence in the town.

In addition to ordering an investigation, the governor has instructed the police to issue guidelines on the usage of local guns to enhance the safety of citizens, especially at public events. He has dispatched a high-powered delegation to Ejigbo to help restore calm in the wake of the tragic incident.
