Arrest Made in Fatal Shooting of Weakley County Deputy: Ohio Woman Faces Murder Charge

Martin, Tennessee—An Ohio woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a Weakley County deputy early Friday morning. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported that 44-year-old Khristi Dawn Cunningham was taken into custody shortly after the incident.

The shooting occurred just before 3 a.m. as deputies responded to a report of gunfire at a hotel on University Street in Martin. Deputy Derrick Bonham, who had been assigned to the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office for two years, was conducting a search for potential witnesses at a nearby gas station when he encountered Cunningham. Circumstances leading to the shooting are currently under investigation, but officials say Cunningham allegedly drew a weapon and shot the deputy.

Bonham was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Law enforcement officials from Martin Police responded to the gas station and arrested Cunningham, who is now facing a charge of first-degree murder. She is being held without bond as the investigation continues.

Sheriff Terry McDade confirmed that Bonham was a Greenfield resident and the father of three young children. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to Bonham’s family. “This is an incredibly difficult time for our community and law enforcement family,” McDade stated.

The incident has sent shockwaves through Weakley County and surrounding areas, prompting an outpouring of support for the fallen deputy’s family. Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett conveyed sympathies on behalf of his agency, urging others to keep Bonham’s family and the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office in their thoughts and prayers.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is being led by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. As agents work to piece together the events leading to the tragedy, the community is left grappling with the loss of a dedicated public servant. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses, and officials aim to ensure transparency in the process.
