Philadelphia police have made a second arrest in connection with a mass shooting last month in the Grays Ferry neighborhood that left three people dead and several others injured. Daquan Brown, 21, was detained on Tuesday in the 1500 block of South Morston Street. He is facing charges that include murder and attempted murder, among other offenses.
Authorities reported that at least a dozen additional suspects are still being sought, following a chaotic scene where 13 firearms and over 140 ballistic pieces of evidence were recovered. As the investigation unfolds, one of the key suspects, 24-year-old Christopher Battle, has an active arrest warrant for his alleged role in the violent incident.
Previously, police arrested Terrell Frazier, 22, in connection with the shooting last Wednesday. The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. on July 7, when gunfire erupted in the 1500 block of South Etting Street during a gathering that drew an estimated 100 to 200 attendees. Eyewitness accounts and video footage have revealed the startling moment when individuals suddenly brandished weapons and opened fire.
Detectives have described the shooting as a case of “contagious gunfire,” suggesting that an initial shot, likely fired into the air by one individual, triggered a wave of retaliatory shooting from others present. This unexpected chain reaction led to a scene of utter chaos and tragedy.
The victims who lost their lives have been identified as Zahir Wylie, 23; Jason Reese, 19; and Azir Harris, 24. Among the wounded are a 15-year-old girl and two 17-year-old boys, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the violence that unfolded that night.
Despite the unsettling circumstances surrounding the tragedy, officials indicated that the shooting did not stem from an argument or conflict among rival groups. Instead, they believe it was a reckless moment where gunfire escalated uncontrollably within a large crowd.
In light of the ongoing investigation, police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in locating the remaining suspects. Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact the Philadelphia police directly or submit an anonymous tip online. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this violence, authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to justice.
