Arrest of Suspected Shooter in Jatiyatabadi Leader’s Murder Highlights Ongoing Tensions in Dhaka

Dhaka, Bangladesh — Authorities have apprehended a suspect connected to the January 7 assassination of a prominent political figure affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, furthering the investigation into a case that has shocked the local community. Abdur Rahim was arrested Friday morning in Narsingdi in relation to the shooting death of Azizur Rahman Musabbir, who served as the central joint general secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal.

Musabbir, along with Abu Sufian, the general secretary of the Karwan Bazar Van Association, was gunned down around 8:15 p.m. outside the Ahsanullah Institute of Technical and Vocational Education and Training Centre in the Tejturibazar neighborhood. The incident raised alarms regarding safety in the area, as eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes during the shooting.

Detective Branch officials confirmed Rahim’s arrest and indicated that CCTV footage played a crucial role in identifying him as a possible shooter. Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam stated that a firearm was also recovered during the arrest, adding weight to the charges against the suspect.

Prior to Rahim’s arrest, law enforcement detained another suspect, Zinnat, along with an accomplice named Billal, believed to be involved in orchestrating Musabbir’s murder. A senior detective mentioned that the footage from the scene showed two armed individuals, suggesting that further questioning of the suspects could uncover more details about the motives behind the killing.

Initial investigations suggested that extortion may have been a factor in the murder, although subsequent statements from the police indicated that it might be linked to business competition. Authorities maintain that the killing lacks any political motivations. However, this assessment has been met with skepticism by members of the BNP and its associated organizations, who assert that Musabbir’s death was politically motivated, occurring in a tense pre-election atmosphere ahead of the February 12 general elections.

As the investigation continues, officials express hope that the apprehended suspects will provide additional insights into the complex dynamics surrounding this violent incident, shedding light on the underlying factors that led to Musabbir’s tragic demise.
