New Orleans, Louisiana — Authorities have made two arrests in connection with a tragic shooting that left one dead and three others injured at the historic Dooky Chase Restaurant. The incident, which occurred on January 16, has drawn significant attention as the investigation unfolds.
During a press conference on Thursday, New Orleans Police Department officials provided updates on the case. Nineteen-year-old Kareem Harris was fatally shot inside the restaurant, reportedly while trying to seek refuge from an assailant. Police allege that the shooter, identified as 18-year-old Makahi Kelly, chased Harris into the venue and opened fire, striking him and others before fleeing the scene.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick expressed condolences for the victims and highlighted the severity of one woman’s injuries, who traveled from California. “Our thoughts are firmly with those affected by this incident,” she said, noting that the woman is now on the path to recovery.
Kelly has been charged with second-degree murder, while 22-year-old Anthony Johnson, suspected of being involved as a getaway driver, faces similar charges. Johnson was apprehended shortly after Kelly in a separate neighborhood. Investigators executed search warrants at both locations, recovering items deemed crucial to the ongoing investigation.
Witnesses reported that the shooting erupted quickly, as patrons dined in the restaurant. Harris succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the three female victims, two from Los Angeles and one from Florida, were transported to hospitals. One of the women underwent multiple surgeries and is currently stable, and the third has already been released after treatment for a graze wound.
The police operation to apprehend the suspects included reviewing surveillance footage and obtaining tips from the community, which played a critical role in locating Kelly. Authorities lauded the public’s assistance, particularly encouraging parents who facilitated their children’s cooperation with law enforcement.
Although police believe the shooting was targeted, the motive remains unclear. Harris’s family disputes suggestions of retaliation, asserting that he was not involved in any conflicts prior to the tragic event. In light of the incidents, a balloon release was held to honor Harris, gathering friends and family who sought to commemorate his life.
