Jirapa, Ghana — Authorities in the Upper West Region have apprehended nine individuals in connection with a violent incident that left several police officers injured and resulted in the theft of service weapons. The altercation occurred in the Saawie community while officers were carrying out their duties.
In an official statement released by Regional Police Commander Francis K. Viribaare on December 7, 2025, it was reported that a mob of approximately 30 people launched an assault on the officers on December 5. This mob overpowered the officers, confiscating four firearms and inflicting injuries on them.
In response to the aggression, Deputy Commissioner of Police Viribaare assembled a team to provide immediate support to the injured officers and to restore order in the area. The reinforcement team successfully recovered the stolen firearms, although two magazines remain unaccounted for.
The police are actively pursuing further leads to retrieve the missing items and are working to identify any additional suspects linked to the incident. The individuals taken into custody are expected to face legal proceedings soon.
In light of this incident, the police have urged community members to come forward with any information that could assist in the ongoing investigation. “We condemn this violence thoroughly and are committed to ensuring the safety of both our officers and the public,” the commander stated.
