Moscow, Russia — Russian authorities have apprehended a suspect and an alleged accomplice in connection with an assassination attempt on Vladimir Alekseyev, the deputy chief of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency. Reports indicate that the suspect has been taken into custody for interrogation, with a court hearing regarding pretrial detention anticipated on February 8.
Initial findings suggest the incident may have escalated into a serious criminal case involving charges of attempted murder and illegal arms trafficking. However, official confirmation regarding the detention has not been released by Russian officials, raising questions about the details of the investigation.
Alekseyev reportedly underwent surgery and regained consciousness on February 7. Although he remains under medical care, official updates on his condition have been sparse. Russian media sources, citing Telegram channels, noted that the gunman, believed to have shot Alekseyev, is being extradited from Dubai, alongside an accomplice.
The identity of the shooter has yet to be disclosed, generating intrigue amid rising allegations of Ukrainian involvement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has suggested that Ukraine orchestrated the attack to disrupt peace negotiations, although he did not provide supporting evidence for this claim.
The attack occurred on February 6 when Alekseyev was shot multiple times inside his apartment building. Investigators believe the assailant disguised as a food delivery worker gained access to the building before launching the attack in the stairwell. Alekseyev allegedly attempted to fend off the shooter, ultimately sustaining injuries.
Alekseyev, second in command at the GRU, has gained notoriety for connections to various high-profile operations, including the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in the UK and ties to the Wagner Group, a controversial paramilitary organization. Following the assassination of Yevgeny Prigozhin, co-founder of the Wagner Group, in a plane crash last August, suspicions have heightened regarding the GRU’s role in covert military actions.
In light of these circumstances, the U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Alekseyev and other GRU officials for their involvement in cyber-espionage activities targeting American political entities. If evidence confirms the attempt on Alekseyev’s life, it would join a troubling trend of violent incidents affecting senior Russian military figures.
The surge in attacks has often been attributed to Ukrainian intelligence’s audacious operations within Russian territory, escalating tensions between the two nations. Previous incidents include the car bombing of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov in December and the assassination of another general, Yaroslav Moskalik, earlier in 2023.
As the investigation unfolds, the implications of this assassination attempt could reshape both domestic and international perceptions of Russian military operations and strategies amid ongoing conflict.
