Assault Charges Filed Against Cato Man After Domestic Violence Incident Leaves Victim Injured

CATO, N.Y. — A domestic disturbance in Cayuga County has led to the arrest of a local man on multiple charges, including assault and weapon possession. The incident unfolded on November 6, prompting a swift response by deputies after receiving a call about a violent altercation.

Authorities identified the suspect as 56-year-old Daniel J. Root, who resides in Cato. Upon arrival at the scene around 5:16 p.m., deputies discovered a female victim exhibiting injuries to her face and head, reportedly inflicted during the altercation with Root.

Investigators learned that the victim was assaulted with a handheld butane torch tank. In a desperate attempt to seek help, she tried to contact emergency services, but Root allegedly interfered by seizing her phone and destroying it. Following the attack, the victim was able to escape to a neighboring residence, where she called for assistance.

She was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for her injuries. The condition of the victim has not been disclosed, but she is reported to be recovering.

Root was located at his home later that evening and taken into custody without incident. Following the arrest, he was processed and transported to the Cayuga County Jail, where he awaits arraignment. He is currently held on bail set at $10,000 cash or a $15,000 bond.
