Assault on Calgary Transit Drivers Sparks Renewed Safety Concerns and Enhanced Security Measures

Calgary, Alberta — Three individuals, including two bus drivers, were hospitalized following an assault by a reportedly intoxicated man at a bus loop in northeast Calgary on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. at the intersection of Centre Street North and 78 Avenue NE, according to authorities.

Calgary police responded to alarmed calls indicating that a man appeared to be causing disturbances and had attacked several individuals in the bus loop. Preliminary reports confirmed that three victims suffered minor injuries during the assaults. The two bus drivers were outside their vehicles when they were targeted.

No weapons were involved in the incidents, police confirmed. The man believed to be responsible was apprehended shortly after the assaults, and officers stated that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

This latest incident comes at a time when the safety of transit workers in Calgary is under heightened scrutiny. Just last month, a bus driver faced a violent attack by two unknown assailants who reacted aggressively when he refused to deviate from his scheduled route. That driver suffered significant injuries and was initially hospitalized in critical condition but was later upgraded to stable.

Due to rising concerns over the safety of transit operators, city councillors have recently approved funding aimed at enhancing security measures for bus drivers. A $15 million initiative was put forward to install protective security shields in city buses, aimed at minimizing risks for drivers and ensuring a safer transportation environment for both the staff and the public.

As the community grapples with these unsettling events, local authorities emphasize the importance of safety protocols and the need for continued vigilance to protect both transit personnel and passengers alike.
