Assault on Elderly Woman in Seattle: Suspect Charged with First-Degree Attack After Violent Encounter

Seattle, Wash. — A 42-year-old man has been charged with first-degree assault following an attack on a 75-year-old woman in downtown Seattle last week. The alleged incident occurred near 3rd Avenue and James Street, prompting a swift police response and public outcry.

Prosecutors allege that Fale Vaigalepa Pea violently assaulted the victim with a wooden stick embedded with metal screws, striking her face and causing severe injuries. This incident has raised alarm among community members, many of whom witnessed the assault.

Detective Eric Muñoz of the Seattle Police Department detailed the brutality of the attack, noting that the woman was struck like a baseball bat, resulting in serious facial trauma. “She’s lucky to be alive, but there is a possibility she may lose sight in one eye,” said King County Prosecuting Attorney spokesperson Casey McNerthney, describing the situation as horrific.

On December 5, police received multiple reports about a man behaving aggressively in the area. Bystanders immediately came to the woman’s aid after she fell to the ground, suffering a significant laceration. Emergency calls led to rapid intervention from the authorities.

Thanks to the Seattle Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center, officers were alerted to Pea’s movements within minutes of the assault. King County Sheriff’s deputies located and detained him nearby shortly thereafter.

Pea, who has a prior conviction for second-degree assault dating back to 2012, was taken into custody without resistance. Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from the crime scene, further solidifying the case against him. He is set for arraignment on December 11.

The injured woman received urgent medical attention from the Seattle Fire Department and was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where she underwent emergency surgery to treat her injuries.

Authorities have highlighted Pea as a known violent felon, raising concerns about public safety. “This attack was an egregious act of violence against an elderly individual who had no way to defend herself,” Muñoz emphasized.

As police continue to investigate the incident, the community is left grappling with the implications of such violent acts in their neighborhoods.
