Assault on Infant Results in Three-Year Sentence for Woman Inflicting "Car Crash-Like" Injuries

Alloa, Scotland — A 26-year-old woman has been sentenced to three years in prison after assaulting a one-month-old baby, leaving him with severe injuries reminiscent of those sustained in serious vehicle accidents. Shaazia Arshad was convicted of inflicting nearly 30 distinct injuries on the infant, whose identity is protected under legal guidelines.

During proceedings at Stirling Sheriff Court, prosecutors revealed that the baby had been born healthy and showed no signs of any medical conditions that might compromise his skeletal system. Despite acknowledging her role in the assault, Arshad was unable to provide a coherent explanation for how the injuries occurred.

Prosecutor Alistair McDermid detailed a series of examinations that uncovered extensive physical trauma. The infant, who suffered from a bruised and hemorrhaged eyelid, had 19 broken ribs, a fractured arm, and multiple leg fractures. “Injuries of this nature are consistent with those typically seen in severe car accidents,” McDermid noted, emphasizing the significant pain inflicted upon the child.

The court heard from a health visitor who assessed the baby when he was three weeks old, reporting that the infant appeared calm and healthy, with no visible injuries. However, shortly thereafter, the baby’s partner noticed signs of distress, including a swollen eyelid and abnormalities in the leg.

Concerned about the baby’s condition, the partner drove him to a general practitioner. Upon examination, the baby emitted a distressing cry when removed from his car seat, prompting immediate medical concern. Third-party witnesses from the medical community later tried to piece together the events leading up to the child’s condition, but Arshad was again unable to account for the circumstances.

Sheriff Keith O’Mahony expressed deep concern over the severity of the injuries inflicted on the infant, categorizing the situation as tragic. He acknowledged her claims of remorse but underscored the necessity of a prison sentence for her actions.

Despite the grave circumstances, the court noted that the baby has reportedly made a full recovery. The case has drawn attention to the vulnerabilities of infants and the responsibilities of caregivers, prompting discussions around child protection and welfare in the community.
