Assault Sparks Outrage Over Digital Transaction Fees in Rural Uttar Pradesh

Uthai, India — A local shopkeeper’s routine transaction turned violent on January 20, resulting in assault charges against a customer and his companion. Girdhar Lal Sahu, 34, who operates Gajpal Kirana & Computer Work, reported the incident to authorities after suffering head injuries during a confrontation over service fees.

According to Sahu’s account, the incident began around 1:30 PM when a customer, Dev Lal Tandon’s son, came to the shop for a digital transaction costing ₹200. When Sahu mentioned a standard service fee of ₹10, tensions escalated. The customer reportedly became agitated and verbally attacked Sahu, which quickly deteriorated into physical violence.

Witnesses allege that Tandon’s younger brother climbed onto the counter and struck Sahu with a metal bracelet, leaving him with visible injuries and bleeding. Outside the shop, another accomplice allegedly brandished a stone in a threatening manner, exacerbating the situation. Following the altercation, both individuals fled the scene, prompting Sahu to seek medical attention at Uthai Hospital before filing his complaint at the local police station.

Uthai Police have launched an investigation into the incident, registering a case based on several sections of the Indian Penal Code, which include charges for voluntarily causing hurt and assault. Police officials are currently gathering statements and working to identify the assailants.

This incident reflects broader issues related to digital payment practices in rural regions, where even minor service charges can stir significant disputes among customers. Experts emphasize the importance of clear communication regarding fees to avoid misunderstandings, suggesting that awareness campaigns could help mitigate such conflicts in the future.

Authorities have reiterated the need for the public to handle disputes calmly and to report any incidents to law enforcement without resorting to violence. As the investigation unfolds, police are committed to apprehending the suspects and ensuring justice for the victim.
