Assault Tragedy: Waynesboro Woman Killed, Suspect Arrested After Dramatic Police Chase

Waynesboro, Virginia — A 46-year-old woman was fatally injured during an aggravated assault at a residence on 13th Street late Thursday evening. The incident prompted a police pursuit that spanned multiple counties before authorities were able to apprehend the suspect.

The victim, identified as Laura V. Humphries, was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the attack. Law enforcement officials reported that Gaines Randolph Thomas, 57, has been taken into custody and faces homicide charges related to the incident.

The confrontation began when officers were dispatched to the 300 block of 13th Street at approximately 9:21 p.m. in response to reports of a domestic disturbance. Upon their arrival, Thomas fled the location in a white BMW SUV. Ignoring the officers’ attempts to initiate a traffic stop, he led them on a reckless chase into Augusta and Nelson counties, ultimately evading capture as he continued into Albemarle County.

Authorities were alerted to Thomas again early Friday morning when deputies received a call about an armed individual, later identified as the suspect, who was reportedly threatening self-harm. He was subsequently located and arrested at 8:15 a.m. in the 700 block of Old Whitehill Road.

In the aftermath of the assault, officers remained on site at the 13th Street residence to gather evidence and investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatality. Thomas now faces multiple felonies, including second-degree murder and eluding law enforcement.

The investigation is still ongoing, and further charges may be forthcoming from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to reach out to the Waynesboro Police Department at (540) 942-6675.

As the community grapples with this tragic event, local authorities emphasize the importance of support and resources for those affected by domestic violence.
