Assault Victim with Chronic Health Issues Found Dead in Dublin Home

Dublin, Ireland – A man who endured life-altering injuries in a violent assault in Temple Bar five years ago was discovered deceased in his home last year, as revealed in an inquest.

Jason ‘Jayo’ Brophy, aged 48 and residing in Reuben Street, Rialto, Dublin 8, was pronounced dead on May 5, 2023. The deceased man’s brother, Joseph Mullins, informed the Dublin District Coroner’s Court that his brother had never fully recovered since being severely beaten years earlier.

Following a brutal assault at Price’s Lane in Dublin city center on April 26, 2019, Mr. Brophy suffered extensive injuries, including a head injury, a fractured skull, broken nose and jaw, spinal damage, and fractured ribs. The assault, carried out by Valerian Burcovsehi, ended with Burcovsehi viciously kicking Mr. Brophy’s head while he lay unconscious on the ground.

Burcovsehi, from Moldova with an address in Dublin, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for his actions during a criminal trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Mr. Brophy spoke out about the profound impact the assault had on him, leaving him physically, emotionally, and mentally scarred for life.

Mr. Brophy’s brother detailed how he found his brother unresponsive the morning following a day out and expressed concerns about his breathing. The deceased, who was undergoing methadone treatment, had a history of substance abuse and struggled with various medical issues. His sister, Linda Brophy, disclosed that she managed his finances due to his inability to handle money effectively.

A postmortem report revealed that Mr. Brophy, who suffered from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, had pneumonia and had consumed both methadone and cocaine before his passing. Coroner Clare Keane delivered a narrative verdict, attributing Mr. Brophy’s death to a mix of natural causes and drug toxicity.
