Wallsend, United Kingdom – A man in Wallsend has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for subjecting a vulnerable woman to a horrifying and prolonged sexual assault. Liam Maughan, 38, of Marine Avenue, inflicted a series of brutal attacks on the woman, including strangling her until she lost consciousness and whipping her with a heavy-duty skipping rope.
During the ordeal, Maughan sexually assaulted the woman, strangled her again until she blacked out, and threatened her with knives, claiming he would dismember her. The victim managed to escape to safety after enduring the traumatic abuse, with Maughan initially trying to justify his actions by falsely claiming the assault was consensual.
In court, Maughan pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by penetration, one count of threat to kill, one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of intentional strangulation. The judge handed down a 17-year prison sentence and imposed a lifelong ban on Maughan contacting the victim.
Prosecutors described the violent assault as terrifying and stated that Maughan’s actions were utterly horrifying for the victim. The Crown Prosecution Service worked closely with law enforcement to gather evidence against Maughan, highlighting the bravery of the victim in coming forward to seek justice.
Detectives leading the investigation commended the victim for her courage and strength throughout the process. They emphasized the importance of understanding consent and ensuring that victims of sexual assault receive the necessary support and assistance.
Authorities urge anyone who has been a victim of rape or sexual assault to come forward and report the crimes. Support is available from law enforcement agencies and various support services to help victims seek justice and recovery from such traumatic experiences.
