Ernakulam, Kerala – A man was arrested by Kerala police on Wednesday, January 29, after being accused of assaulting a 19-year-old woman found unconscious and partially undressed at her residence in Ernakulam district. The suspect, identified as Anoop, faces charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha (BNS), including rape, house trespass, and attempted murder.
The young woman, a survivor of child abuse, was discovered with severe injuries and a shawl wrapped tightly around her neck. She is currently receiving ventilator support at a private hospital in Ernakulam.
Anoop confessed to the authorities that he had physically harmed the woman, suggesting that she attempted suicide due to the distress caused by the assault. Reports indicate that Anoop went to her house on the night of January 25 after being unable to reach her by phone. The victim was home alone at the time, leading to a verbal dispute between them regarding her previous phone conversations, escalating into physical violence.
Following the incident, Anoop left the premises the next morning, leaving the victim behind. She was found by a relative who promptly rushed her to the hospital. Medical examinations revealed significant brain damage, although there was no evidence of sexual assault.
The survivor’s mother mentioned that Anoop had been visiting their home regularly and began tormenting her daughter physically and mentally over her friendships with other boys. She expressed regret for not being able to prevent the abusive situation, disclosing that both her and neighbors had previously alerted the police about Anoop’s unwelcome visits. The suspect has been charged under sections for rape, house trespass with harmful intent, and attempted murder under BNS and is set to appear in court.
This disturbing case highlights the ongoing issue of violence against women and the importance of intervention and support for survivors of abuse. The community’s response to such incidents is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals facing threats and harm, emphasizing the need for vigilance and action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
