KAHULUI, Hawaii — A violent confrontation in a parking lot has resulted in the arrest of a 32-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history, following an assault involving an aluminum bat. The incident occurred last Friday evening outside a Target store as a couple and a young child were leaving the premises.
The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, was attacked after being confronted by the suspect, Gabriel Pangkee. According to the victim’s girlfriend, Kiana Bascon, Pangkee approached them aggressively, accusing them of causing the death of a family member while brandishing the bat. In a state of panic, Bascon rushed to her car to protect her daughter, which left her boyfriend vulnerable to the assault.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with one bystander recounting the rapid succession of strikes delivered to the victim. The witness recalled seeing Pangkee swing the bat multiple times, forcing the victim into a defensive position before fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement apprehended Pangkee shortly after the incident, charging him with several offenses including assault and criminal property damage. His criminal record includes prior convictions, most notably a felony burglary from 2018, which resulted in a probation sentence following a mental health evaluation.
The assault has left the victim with considerable injuries, particularly to his head and hands, which he incurred while attempting to shield himself from the blows. He is in need of surgical intervention on Oahu but faces financial barriers due to a lack of health insurance. Bascon expressed concern about the financial strain on their family due to medical expenses that could mount significantly.
Bascon is also advocating for increased security measures at the Target store, stating that shoppers should feel safe while visiting. She believes that the store must take some responsibility for the incident occurring on its property and hopes the company will assist with covering medical costs, given the circumstances.
