Attack Leaves Victim with Severe Injuries After Unprovoked Assault in Peterborough

Peterborough, England — Three men were sentenced for a violent assault that left a victim with severe injuries, including fractured eye sockets and multiple head lacerations. The attack occurred on Eastfield Road outside a shop and was described as unprovoked by local authorities.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of July 24 of last year, when the 46-year-old victim was alongside a woman and a 42-year-old man. Initially, the younger man was attacked by Dumitru Costache, 41, who punched him in the face. After being pushed to the ground by Robert Cojocario, 47, the victim suffered further blows from Costache before Bruno Cerquijcini, 46, struck him with an axe, leaving him critically injured.

Both the victim and his companion required hospitalization following the altercation. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene, prompting armed officers to swiftly apprehend Cerquijcini and Costache at Cerquijcini’s residence later that day. Cojocario was captured in a nearby area, known as Monument Street.

In court proceedings held at Cambridge Crown Court, Costache was sentenced to three years and ten months in prison, while Cojocario received a one-year sentence. Both men pleaded guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm with intent and actual bodily harm. Cerquijcini, who also admitted to possessing an axe and causing bodily harm without intent, received an 18-month suspended sentence, which allows him to avoid immediate imprisonment if he meets specific conditions over the next two years.

Detective Constable Lauren Easton, who led the investigation, emphasized the brutality of the incident. She stated that the assault had lasting effects on the victims, making it clear that such unprovoked violence is a significant concern for community safety.

Local residents were reportedly shocked by the attack, illustrating the broader issue of public safety in the area. Authorities have urged individuals to report any suspicious behavior, highlighting the importance of community vigilance in preventing violence.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this assault, discussions around support for victims of violent crime are becoming increasingly prevalent. The judicial system’s handling of similar cases may serve as a crucial component in addressing the long-term implications of such acts on individuals and society as a whole.
