Attack on Edmonton City Hall Deemed Politically Motivated, Reaches Legal Threshold for Terrorism Charges

EDMONTON, Alberta – Authorities have unveiled new details regarding the attack on Edmonton City Hall in January, suggesting that the incident was politically motivated and may lead to terrorism charges. According to Supt. Glenn Sells of the RCMP’s national security team, the discovery of an SKS assault-style rifle, prohibited rifle magazines, ammunition, and gasoline-filled Molotov cocktails at the scene indicates the potential harm that could have transpired that day.

The attack, which unfolded as a heavily armed individual entered city hall through an underground parkade, discharged a firearm, and ignited small incendiary devices, left the building riddled with damaged glass, ceilings, and walls. Despite the chaos, no injuries were reported, thanks in part to the swift actions of city hall security personnel and emergency responders who secured the premises and safely evacuated those inside, including a class of Grade 1 students.

“On Jan. 23, 2024, the tranquility of Edmonton’s municipal government was jolted by a violent assault at City Hall, leaving a lasting impact on those present within the building,” remarked Sells. The incident triggered a comprehensive review by the RCMP’s national security division due to its concerning nature.

Following a thorough investigation, Bezhani Sarvar, 28, was charged with multiple terrorism-related offenses, including counselling commission of a terrorism offense and possession of property for terrorist purposes. Additional charges include deliberately having incendiary material during the commission of a criminal offense, among others. Sarvar, a Canadian Forces veteran who previously worked as a commissionaire at various Edmonton sites, including city hall, was taken into custody pending further legal proceedings.

Authorities are examining a video linked to Sarvar’s online presence, where he delivers a contentious manifesto criticizing various societal issues. It remains crucial for law enforcement to dissect the evidence, statements, and electronic data collected to unravel the motives and actions surrounding the attack. The case continues to evolve as further details emerge and legal processes unfold to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
