PHILADELPHIA — A person of interest connected to a violent dog attack on an 11-month-old puppy is now in police custody, with charges anticipated to follow. The incident occurred in Center City, where the puppy, named Stella, suffered severe injuries in December after being attacked by an off-leash pit bull.
According to the police, Stella was outside the Wanamaker Building when the unleashed dog, reportedly owned by a homeless individual, lunged at her, resulting in the crushing of both bones in her front left leg. Her owner, J. Bazzel, was taking Stella to work at the time of the incident.
Veterinary experts emphasized how serious the situation could have been had Stella sustained bites to more vital areas. Dr. Erik Zager from Philadelphia Animal Specialty and Emergency noted that while the injuries were not life-threatening, any dog attack poses a dangerous risk, highlighting the need for responsible pet ownership.
After undergoing surgery, Stella is currently recuperating in a cast, demonstrating resilience in her recovery journey. But the incident has raised alarms within the community, prompting discussions about leash laws and pet safety. Following the attack, Bazzel took to social media, sharing her experience, which resonated with others who have encountered the same dog in the area.
Local dog owners expressed concern over the importance of adhering to leash regulations, particularly in public spaces. Philadelphia law mandates that dogs must be leashed with a maximum length of six feet to prevent similar incidents from occurring. Bazzel has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the substantial veterinary expenses resulting from the attack, estimated to reach $9,000. The community has rallied around her, sharing their support and similar stories, further highlighting the pressing issue of animal control.
