Glasgow, Scotland — The British Transport Police (BTP) has released shocking CCTV footage that captures a brutal attack on a ScotRail train, in which a man was recently convicted of attempted murder. The incident, which occurred in February of the previous year, has underscored the urgent need for improved safety measures on public transportation.
Thomas Craig, 48, from East Renfrewshire, was found guilty of violently assaulting two fellow passengers following a minor disagreement. The events unfolded when Craig, fueled by alcohol, initiated conversation with other travelers on the Glasgow to Perth train, quickly descending into chaos as his behavior escalated.
Witnesses recounted the frantic moments after Craig hurled an insult at one passenger. Without warning, he leapt from his seat, striking the victim twice with a glass bottle. The first victim attempted to flee, but Craig chased him down the carriage, continuing to attack until the bottle shattered. Left clutching the jagged piece, he further escalated his aggression.
In an effort to protect his friend, another passenger intervened, only to be met with brutal retaliation. Craig delivered an onslaught of punches and then stabbed him with the broken bottle, inflicting a severe wound near the victim’s heart. The attack left the second man with a collapsed lung and a severed artery, resulting in significant blood loss.
After the violent confrontation, Craig allegedly took one of the victims’ phones, adding to the list of his transgressions. He then calmly walked down the train, discarding his blood-smeared clothing for a clean hoodie from his belongings.
When emergency services arrived at Larbert railway station, they found both victims in desperate need of medical attention. They were transported to the hospital, while Craig was taken into custody. BTP Detective Inspector Marc Francey described Craig’s actions as “indiscriminate and thuggish,” emphasizing the fear instilled in numerous passengers who witnessed the attack.
“As a result of his reckless behavior, Craig could have caused even more dire consequences for his victims and himself,” Francey added. The detective expressed gratitude for the paramedics’ prompt response, noting that their efforts likely prevented a more tragic outcome.
Craig is scheduled for sentencing on January 12, where the court will determine the consequences of his violent actions. This incident has reignited discussions about the safety measures on public transport and the need for enhanced intervention strategies to prevent such dangerous occurrences in the future.
