Davis, California – The chancellor of the University of California, Davis campus has initiated an investigation into a violent attack by masked protesters on an event organized by a student conservative group. The attack occurred during a “Prove me Wrong” event hosted by Turning Point USA, a registered student organization at UC Davis, and has been described as disappointing and embarrassing by Chancellor Gary May.
According to May, those targeted in the attack were simply expressing their views in a peaceful manner, which is their right. The incident has prompted the university to launch a full independent review to determine the identities of the masked individuals responsible for the violence. May emphasized that if any UC Davis students or employees were involved in the attack, they would face disciplinary action in accordance with university policies and could also be held accountable through the justice system.
The event, which was scheduled to feature guest speaker Brandon Tatum, a former police officer known for his conservative viewpoints, was disrupted when approximately 30 individuals approached the event tent and engaged in altercations with supporters. Demonstrators reportedly destroyed equipment, signage, and tables, in addition to assaulting event staff. Despite the violence that transpired, no arrests were made at the scene.
Turning Point USA founder and CEO, Charlie Kirk, expressed disappointment that police officers did not intervene to prevent the violence. He mentioned that this incident was not the first time his organization had been targeted by violent protesters at the university. Kirk highlighted his concerns about the presence of Antifa activists on the UC Davis campus, emphasizing a pattern of destructive behavior.
Chancellor May condemned the actions of the protesters as appalling and unacceptable. He reiterated the university’s commitment to upholding free expression and open dialogue while maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards violence on campus. May affirmed that acts of violence and intimidation have no place in the university community.
The incident at UC Davis serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by conservative groups on college campuses and the importance of addressing conflicts in a peaceful and respectful manner. As the investigation unfolds, the university administration remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and staff members.
