Glasgow, Scotland — A 48-year-old man was convicted of attempted murder and serious assault after a vicious attack on two fellow passengers aboard a train. Thomas Craig was found guilty following a four-day trial at the High Court in Glasgow that concluded on November 28.
Craig will be sentenced on January 12, 2024, as the court prepares to address the severity of his actions. The case stems from an incident on February 16, 2024, when Craig, reportedly inebriated, engaged in conversation with passengers seated across the aisle. Within minutes, a verbal altercation escalated into a brutal attack.
Witnesses testified that after hurling an insult, Craig leaped from his seat and struck one victim multiple times with a glass bottle. As the injured man attempted to flee, Craig chased him, continuing the assault until the bottle shattered, leaving Craig wielding the jagged remnants.
In a heartbreaking turn, the victim’s friend intervened and was also attacked, suffering severe injuries that included a stab wound close to his heart. The friend endured a collapsed lung and significant blood loss, requiring intensive medical care. The incident left bystanders in shock, highlighting the sudden descent into violence over what appeared to be a minor dispute.
After the attacks, Craig returned to his seat and discarded the broken bottle piece, before stealing the victim’s phone and changing his bloodied clothing for a clean hoodie. Law enforcement and medical teams met the train at Larbert railway station, where Craig was apprehended and the victims were rushed to the hospital for urgent treatment.
British Transport Police Detective Inspector Marc Francey described the scene as chaotic, noting that Craig’s actions were inexplicable given the minor nature of the disagreement. He emphasized the role luck played in preventing further tragedy, crediting the paramedics with saving lives.
Francey assured the public that such violent behavior on public transport is intolerable and vowed to pursue all offenders aggressively. He expressed hope that the guilty verdict would offer some solace to the victims after their harrowing ordeal.
