Attack on VTA Platform Leaves Victim with Serious Injuries

San Jose, California – A 45-year-old man was left severely injured following an unexpected attack by an individual donning an armored vest on a VTA platform in San Jose on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by authorities.

Around 1:15pm at the Children’s Discovery Museum VTA Light Rail Station, the victim was assaulted by a suspect later identified as Andrew Perez. The attack, which was deemed unprovoked, occurred between two men who were not acquainted with each other, leaving authorities puzzled as to the motive behind the assault.

In an uncommon move, the Sheriff’s Office released a video capturing the assault, describing it as a disturbing and brutal incident that resulted in serious injuries to the victim. The footage shows the victim being thrown to the ground and violently assaulted by the perpetrator, leaving the victim with severe injuries.

Upon the arrival of deputies shortly after the assault, the victim was found covered in blood from head to torso, prompting concern over the severity of the attack. Medical examination revealed the victim had sustained a significant gash on the forehead requiring seven staples, as well as cuts on the elbow and wrist, indicating a possible use of a sharp weapon during the assault.

Despite the suspect’s initial escape, witnesses and collaboration with the San Jose Police Department led Sheriff’s deputies to Perez’s location near the VTA station, where he was arrested and taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Jail records indicate that Perez is currently held without bail and is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara County Superior Court.

Expressing gratitude towards witnesses who promptly reported the incident, the Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the importance of community involvement in resolving such cases and ensuring the safety of individuals at public transportation stations. The victim, meanwhile, is receiving medical treatment and is in stable condition as authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the assault.
