Attempted Murder: Ocean County Man Admits to Brutally Beating 71-Year-Old Mother with Cane

MANCHESTER, N.J. — A local man has confessed to attempted murder following a brutal assault on his elderly mother, which left her in critical condition. Joseph Cavallaro, 45, admitted to using a cane to inflict serious injury during a dispute last summer, which resulted in severe trauma for the 71-year-old victim.

Authorities responded to an emergency call from the Pine Acres Manor Mobile Home Community on June 27, where they found Cavallaro’s mother with extensive injuries. She had suffered fractures to her skull and ribs, along with facial damage, and was urgently transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. After several days in critical care, she has since recovered and been discharged.

The confrontation between Cavallaro and his mother escalated from a verbal argument into a violent encounter, though investigators have not disclosed the nature of their dispute. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer stated that Cavallaro intentionally struck his mother with a cane, leading to her loss of consciousness and multiple serious injuries.

During a court appearance on January 30, Cavallaro pled guilty to the charges and acknowledged intent to kill his mother in a shocking admission. He had been incarcerated in Ocean County Jail for over seven months prior to his plea.

Prosecutors are advocating for a 10-year prison sentence, with a hearing set for March 26, 2026. As the case unfolds, the case raises larger concerns regarding domestic violence against the elderly, highlighting the vital need for prevention and support resources for vulnerable populations.

Cavallaro’s violent act not only impacted his mother’s life but has also sent shockwaves through the community, prompting discussions on the importance of mental health resources and family support systems. As the situation continues to evolve, family dynamics in similar cases remain a focal point of community discourse.
