Jackson, Wyoming – A disabled Army Reserve Veteran, Shayne Patrick Burke, had a frightening encounter with a grizzly bear while hiking in Grand Teton National Park on Signal Mountain. Burke, in search of a great grey owl, found himself face to face with the bear and her cub, despite making noise to alert them of his presence. The situation quickly escalated as the sow charged at him, leaving him with no time to use the bear spray he carried for protection.
In a desperate attempt to protect himself, Burke laid down on his belly, interlocking his hands behind his neck, as the bear attacked him. Miraculously, the bear inadvertently triggered the bear spray during the struggle, which ultimately saved Burke’s life by forcing the bear to retreat. Despite sustaining puncture wounds, he managed to apply makeshift tourniquets to his injuries and call for help.
Park rangers and rescue personnel swiftly responded to the scene, providing emergency medical care and airlifting Burke to safety. The National Park Service confirmed that the incident was a surprise encounter with the bear, emphasizing the importance of taking precautions in bear country, such as carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it. Although the experience left Burke with puncture wounds, he is expected to fully recover.
The harrowing ordeal on Signal Mountain was described by Burke as the most violent encounter he has ever faced, surpassing the dangers he encountered during his military service. Despite the traumatic experience, Burke’s resilience and quick thinking likely played a crucial role in his survival. Officials have determined that no actions will be taken against the bear involved in the incident, as it was deemed a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
As Burke continues his journey towards recovery, his story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters and the importance of being prepared when exploring the natural habitats of bears. His bravery and survival instincts in the face of danger highlight the resilience and courage of individuals in the most challenging circumstances.
