Birmingham Teen Fatally Shot in Domestic Incident, Suspect in Custody

Birmingham, Alabama – A tragic incident unfolded when a 15-year-old girl was fatally shot and her younger brother injured in a shooting at a downtown Birmingham apartment during a domestic dispute. The heartbreaking event took place before 12:30 p.m. in the 500 block of 25th Street North, specifically at Park Place apartments. Prior to the shooting, officers had responded to the apartment following reports of a verbal domestic disturbance, although no physical altercation was noted.

Chief Scott Thurmond confirmed that previous domestic-related calls had been made from the apartment. The situation escalated later in the day when the ex-boyfriend of the woman residing in the apartment returned, leading to a burst of gunfire in the parking lot. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots fired before the assailant fled the scene.

Tragically, the teenage girl succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while her 5-year-old brother sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was rushed to Children’s of Alabama for medical attention. The children’s mother, who is pregnant, was also taken to a nearby hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service for observation.

Following a brief search, the suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed pending formal charges, was apprehended in Woodlawn later that afternoon. Chief Thurmond expressed his dismay at the violent incident, emphasizing the loss of a young, innocent life and condemning the senseless act of violence that occurred in a community where children should be enjoying their summer break.

The Chief commended law enforcement’s swift action in capturing the suspect, highlighting the dedication and sacrifice of the men and women who work tirelessly to protect the city. He noted that the young victim’s death marked Birmingham’s 70th homicide this year, adding to the troubling tally of violent crimes in the city and Jefferson County.

As the community grapples with yet another senseless tragedy, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing domestic disputes and gun violence to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling interpersonal conflicts that can escalate into fatal confrontations.
