BJP Leader Shot Dead in IIOJK: Police Identifies Victim as Aijaz Ahmad

Srinagar, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) – Violence erupted in the disputed region of IIOJK as suspected rebels shot and killed Aijaz Ahmad, a local leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The incident took place in Shopian district, sparking outrage and condemnation from local authorities. Ahmad’s death comes amidst the backdrop of ongoing national elections in India, adding tension to the already volatile region.

Ahmad’s affiliation with the BJP has made him a target for violence in IIOJK, where separatist groups have long been at odds with Indian rule. The conflict over the Himalayan territory has resulted in thousands of deaths over the years, as both India and Pakistan claim ownership of the region in its entirety.

In a separate incident on the same day, two Indian tourists were injured in an attack in the nearby Anantnag district. The violence in IIOJK has prompted heightened security measures, with authorities conducting extensive searches to locate those responsible for the attacks.

Since the Indian government stripped IIOJK of its limited autonomy in 2019, tensions in the region have risen significantly. The move to bring the Muslim-majority area directly under New Delhi’s control was met with criticism and protests, leading to a surge in clashes between security forces and separatist groups.

The recent spate of violence in IIOJK has raised concerns about the safety and stability of the region, especially as it coincides with the ongoing general elections in India. The killing of Ahmad and the targeting of Indian tourists highlight the continued volatility and unrest in the disputed territory, underscoring the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining peace and security in the region.
