JACKSONVILLE, FL – What began as a routine Saturday night at a fast-food restaurant ended in tragedy when an 18-year-old employee, known for his ambition and kindness, was fatally shot while trying to keep the peace.
Police were called to the Burger King on Blanding Road just before 9 p.m., responding to reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, two men were found wounded inside the restaurant. Matthew Jackson, a recent high school graduate working at the establishment, was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 33-year-old man was transported to a hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators quickly determined that an altercation between two customers had erupted inside the restaurant. Witnesses recalled that the dispute began when an individual, identified by police as Dawud Burritt, entered the building and encountered a man with whom he had once been close. The former friends had not spoken for a year after a falling out. Tensions escalated rapidly as one attempted to make amends—extending a handshake—only to be rebuffed, leading to shouting and, eventually, a physical confrontation.
Jackson, who was working his shift at the time and known for looking out for others, stepped in to try and defuse the situation. Instead, the chaos intensified. As the conflict spilled closer to the food counter, authorities say Burritt drew a firearm, sending panic through the restaurant and its drive-thru lane. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots ring out as customers and employees scrambled for safety.
Officers found Jackson’s body near the drive-thru window, a chilling reminder of his attempt to protect those around him. The second victim was found toward the back of the restaurant, awaiting emergency responders.
Police launched a manhunt for Burritt, 28, and took him into custody the following day. He now faces charges including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and burglary. Authorities say Burritt is being held without bond at the Duval County Jail, with his next court appearance scheduled for mid-December.
In the aftermath, the community is mourning the loss of Jackson, who was set to join the U.S. Marines after graduation—a dream that friends say reflected his sense of duty and selflessness.
