Burned body of missing 1-year-old little boy from Alabama found in burn pit near his mom’s home

FAYETTE, AL – The grim discovery of a missing Alabama toddler’s remains, found in a burn pile near his family’s home, has brought a tragic chapter to the investigation that has haunted the community for months. Authorities confirmed Thursday that the body discovered is that of 1-year-old Kahleb Collins, who disappeared eight months ago.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the remains were unearthed during a detailed search of the property belonging to Wendy Pamela Bailey, Kahleb’s mother. Bailey is currently facing multiple felony charges. Forensic experts will now work to formally identify the remains, which an anthropologist confirmed belonged to a child.

The circumstances of Kahleb’s disappearance are rooted in a horrific car accident on December 8, 2024. The crash resulted in the deaths of his father, Steven Collins, and his 2-year-old sister, Ryleigh. Bailey, also in the car, survived but was gravely injured. Following the accident, investigators learned of Kahleb’s existence, and his unaccounted status post-crash sparked an intensive search.

Details of the accident were harrowing; Collins was allegedly driving recklessly in wet conditions, reaching speeds over 90 mph. The impact proved deadly, and Ryleigh was reportedly not in a car seat at the time, compounding the tragedy.

Authorities pursued every lead on Kahleb, enlisting help from the 24th Circuit District Attorney’s Office and Alabama State Bureau of Investigation. Initial findings included suspicions that Kahleb had died before the accident. In December, investigators noted they last had credible information of Kahleb being alive back in September of that year.

The investigation deepened when Kahleb’s grandfather and legal custodian, John Bailey, was charged for failing to report the child missing shortly after the crash. Last month, both he and Wendy Bailey faced a range of charges from domestic violence to hindering prosecution, signaling a deeper investigation into the family dynamics and potential neglect.

The sheriff’s office, reflecting on the tragedy, called it a “heartbreaking outcome.” Sheriff Byron Yerby emphasized the community’s shared responsibility to protect its children. He affirmed that while this discovery provides some closure, efforts to seek comprehensive justice for Kahleb are far from over.

As law enforcement pieces together the events leading up to Kahleb’s disappearance and eventual discovery, the community is left grappling with the sobering reminder of vulnerability and loss.
