Encino, Los Angeles – A suspect has been apprehended following a violent robbery on a Metro bus in Encino, marking the third assault on the transit system within the past 24 hours. The incident occurred on a Metro bus at Ventura and Balboa boulevards around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, where the suspect allegedly robbed a man of his cellphone and hit him in the chest. Despite initial reports of a stabbing, a Metro spokesperson clarified that no stabbing actually took place.
In response to the incident, LAPD officers swiftly arrested the suspect as he was attempting to flee the scene. Fortunately, the victim did not sustain any serious injuries and did not require hospitalization. This event joins two other violent incidents that occurred within the Metro system on Monday, including an altercation on a bus in Glendale and a stabbing at the Vermont/Athens C Line train station in South Los Angeles.
The recent surge in violent incidents has left frequent Metro riders feeling apprehensive about their safety. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, a member of the Metro board, expressed concerns about the current approach to passenger safety, emphasizing the need for law enforcement presence. Barger highlighted the importance of involving law enforcement agencies, such as the Los Angeles Police Department, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, and the Long Beach Police Department, in developing an action plan to address these security challenges.
As tensions rise among Metro riders and officials, the community is calling for a comprehensive strategy to enhance safety and prevent future incidents of violence within the transit system. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing passenger safety and implementing effective measures to protect individuals using public transportation in the Los Angeles area.
