Venice, California – A brutal and disturbing attack unfolded in the serene canals of Venice, California, leaving a woman, Mary Klein, in critical condition. Klein, a 54-year-old single mother and artist, was walking near her home around 10:30 p.m. when a man viciously ambushed her from behind on April 6.
The assailant left Klein with devastating injuries, including a fractured jaw, broken teeth, a severe wound on the back of her head, and multiple contusions. Speaking from her hospital bed, Klein recounted the horrifying experience of being unexpectedly attacked, stating that the force was so intense that she felt like she had been hit by a truck.
In a merciless series of events, another woman was also attacked along the Venice canals on the same night. The second victim, who remains unidentified, is currently battling for her life in a coma. The perpetrator, identified as Anthony Jones, 29, was apprehended in San Diego after being on the run since the assaults.
Klein, while relieved by the news of the suspect’s arrest, expressed concerns for the other victim’s well-being and called for justice to be served. Her son, Robert Klein, echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the need for stricter punishment for violent offenders to ensure the safety of communities.
The Los Angeles Police Department, hailed as heroes by Klein, worked tirelessly to apprehend the suspect. Despite harboring no ill will towards Jones, Klein believes that he should face a life sentence for his heinous actions. She also emphasized the importance of addressing mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness issues in Southern California.
As the case heads to the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, police have increased patrols around the Venice canals to enhance the safety of residents and prevent future incidents.
