CLEVELAND, OH – On a snowy Friday morning in Cleveland, a mother’s routine drive turned into a nightmare when a carjacker, armed and desperate, approached her vehicle with her infant son inside. The incident left the woman wounded, her child tossed into the bitter cold, and the community shaken.
Authorities say the attack unfolded around 7:30 a.m. in the 7900 block of Madison Avenue. Without warning, a man confronted the woman as she stood by her vehicle, aiming a firearm at her and demanding cash. When the victim explained she had no money, the situation escalated violently.
The suspect, later identified as 47-year-old Ronald J. Loftis, allegedly wrestled with the woman for her car keys. In the chaos, a single shot rang out, striking the mother in the face. Despite her injury and the urgent danger, her primary concern was the safety of her one-year-old son watching from the back seat.
Loftis seized the opportunity, shoving the wounded woman aside and climbing into the car. Before speeding off, he reportedly yanked the terrified toddler from his seat and hurled him onto the snow-covered ground. The chilling moment marked a new depth of callousness, as the child was left exposed to the elements while his mother bled nearby.
Responding officers located the stolen vehicle a short time later as the search for the assailant intensified. Through prompt investigation, detectives were able to identify Loftis as the prime suspect in the violent act.
The breakthrough came on Saturday, as officers tracked Loftis to a residence on the city’s east side. He was soon taken into custody and transported to the Cuyahoga County Jail, facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery.
Officials described the crime as both brazen and reckless, emphasizing the severe danger into which both mother and child were thrust. The ordeal has left scars, but authorities shared relief that the infant, while traumatized, suffered no physical injuries. The mother remains in stable condition as she recovers from the facial gunshot wound.
On Monday morning, Loftis appeared before a local judge and was ordered held on $500,000 bond. His next court hearing has been scheduled for January 13.
