Carjacking Victim Shoots Attacker: Attempted Murder Charges Filed

Louisville, Kentucky – A man from Elizabethtown is facing a series of charges, including attempted murder and strangulation, after being shot by the individual he allegedly carjacked. The incident unfolded on Thursday morning when Louisville Metro Police officers responded to a vehicle collision on the Outer Loop near Preston Highway, discovering 45-year-old Jason Calhoun with multiple gunshot wounds.

Court documents reveal that investigators suspected Calhoun was involved in a confrontation with another individual on Interstate 65 near Fern Valley Road. Prior to the crash scene, authorities received a report of a potential carjacking on I-65 at the Outer Loop, connecting the two incidents.

The victim of the carjacking recounted that his car had broken down at the I-65 North, Outer Loop exit. Upon returning in his wife’s vehicle and noticing Calhoun behind his broken-down car, the victim was confronted by the suspect. Calhoun demanded the victim hand over the vehicle and, upon learning of the gun inside, proceeded to reach for it, resulting in a physical altercation.

During the altercation, Calhoun allegedly threatened to take the victim’s eyeball and attempted to gouge his eye out. Despite the victim’s struggles, Calhoun continued to threaten him with the firearm, forcibly placing the victim in a headlock and choking him until he began to lose consciousness.

In a moment of survival instinct, the victim managed to gain control of the gun and fired multiple shots at Calhoun, forcing him to flee the scene in the victim’s vehicle. Calhoun’s escape was short-lived, as he was struck by a semi-truck and subsequently apprehended by authorities in the Outer Loop and Preston Highway area.

Calhoun sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to University Hospital, where he is expected to recover. The victim was also taken to the hospital, exhibiting visible injuries and a corneal abrasion to his left eye. Witnesses corroborated the victim’s account of the events, with one individual attesting to seeing Calhoun enter the victim’s vehicle.

The charges against Calhoun include attempted murder, strangulation, robbery, and criminal mischief. An arraignment is scheduled for Friday morning, though uncertainties remain regarding his ability to appear in court due to his hospitalization.
