MADISON, Wis. — The father of a teenage girl who committed a tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School last December has been released on bond after facing serious charges related to the incident. Jeffrey Rupnow, 45, is accused of selling firearms to a minor, in addition to contributing to the delinquency of a child.
Rupnow’s bond was set at $20,000 by a court commissioner, and he has paid a portion to secure his release. The preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled for June 9. His daughter, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, fatally shot teacher Erin West and student Rubi Patricia Vergara, injuring six others before taking her own life.
Court documents indicate that after the shooting, which occurred on December 16, 2024, Rupnow is alleged to have permitted his daughter access to firearms while being aware of her mental health struggles and troubling behaviors. One of the injured victims remains in critical condition, underscoring the tragic consequences of the event.
As part of the conditions of his release, Rupnow is required to wear a GPS monitoring device, is prohibited from visiting the Abundant Life Christian School, and must avoid the local area where the incident occurred. Additionally, he is barred from possessing any firearms.
The charges against Rupnow bring to light ongoing concerns about gun access among youth and the responsibilities of guardians in monitoring their children’s behavior and mental well-being. The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the shooting, remembering the lives lost and affected by this heartbreaking event.
As the preliminary hearing approaches, legal experts and community members anticipate further developments in both Rupnow’s case and discussions surrounding the broader issues of gun safety and mental health awareness. Authorities have emphasized the importance of proactive measures in preventing similar tragedies in the future.
