FARGO, N.D. — A 21-year-old man was charged Monday with manslaughter and several other offenses following the shooting death of his girlfriend last week in Horace. Derrick Lobbo faces serious allegations after 23-year-old Sakeena Khaadi died from gunshot wounds in their shared apartment.
Lobbo’s charges include manslaughter, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and child neglect. The neglect charge stems from allegations that he left his 2-year-old daughter alone in their apartment, where she could access firearms, drugs, and alcohol while seeking help after the shooting incident, court documents reveal.
Investigators with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office reported that Lobbo claimed ownership of the firearm involved in the shooting. According to his account, he was in possession of the gun at the time it discharged, striking Khaadi. Autopsy results indicated that the bullet first hit Khaadi’s forearm before entering her chest.
Emergency responders learned about the shooting through multiple 911 calls. Lobbo’s call was recorded at 7:52 a.m. Following that, a neighbor reported an “unresponsive female,” and an employee from Lobbo’s workplace also called in for help. The responding deputies noted evidence of blood and a marijuana blunt in the apartment.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered Lobbo’s daughter unattended inside. Concerned with her safety, officers led her to a bathroom away from the chaotic scene where Khaadi was being treated. They also found a handgun on the floor, near the kitchen island.
Lobbo, seen running from the scene before being detained, had blood on his hands and clothing. In court, Lobbo’s attorney characterized the shooting as an accident. During the hearing, Lobbo was visibly emotional, apologizing repeatedly, while family members reflected on Khaadi’s cherished role in their lives.
Khaadi’s sister expressed gratitude toward those involved in the case, acknowledging the significant loss of a beloved family member. Prosecutors requested a bail of $750,000, citing Lobbo as a potential flight risk. In response, his attorney argued for a lower amount, emphasizing Lobbo’s community ties and his role as a youth basketball coach.
Ultimately, the judge set bail at $500,000, which is cash-only. Lobbo’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 12, as the investigation continues to unfold amid grief and a call for justice from Khaadi’s loved ones.
