Uvalde, Texas – An independent report commissioned by the city has stirred controversy and disbelief among parents following a tragic school shooting. The report, released on Thursday, examined the actions of Uvalde Police Department officers during the May 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School, where a gunman claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers.
Veronica Mata, the mother of a 10-year-old victim, expressed her frustration and confusion over the findings of the report. She questioned how the officers could have stood idly by in the hallway for 77 minutes while the horrific events unfolded inside the classroom. The report, authored by Jesse Prado, praised the officers for their actions, stating they acted in good faith according to police policy.
The report highlighted challenges with communication and decision-making during the response to the shooting. Prado noted that the presence of distraught parents at the scene further complicated efforts to establish command and control. This contrasts earlier reports, including one from the U.S. Justice Department, which criticized the lack of urgency in addressing the gunman.
Following the presentation of the report, parents erupted in anger, questioning the characterization of the officers’ actions as being in “good faith.” Kimberly Mata-Rubio, a grieving parent, spoke out against the report’s findings, emphasizing the 77 minutes of inaction by the officers while lives hung in the balance.
Despite the findings of the report, community members, including city council member Hector Luevano, expressed their disappointment and called for further accountability. Several officers involved in the incident have lost their jobs, but none have faced criminal charges yet as a criminal investigation by the district attorney’s office remains ongoing.
Veronica Mata, a kindergarten teacher and mother of a victim, continues to fight for justice for her daughter and the other victims of the tragedy. She emphasized the need for safer school environments where children can learn without fear of harm. Mata’s dedication to her students and her pursuit of justice showcase the resilience and strength of a grieving community.
