Coercive Nottingham Bully Jailed After Repeatedly Abusing Ex-Girlfriend

Nottingham, England – A man from Basford, Nottingham, has been sentenced to two years and five months in jail for subjecting his ex-girlfriend to a series of abusive and controlling behavior that culminated in a violent assault. Ryan Burrell, 29, utilized threats and violence to coerce his victim into staying in a relationship with him. His actions led to the woman sustaining a broken arm after he repeatedly punched her in the face during an attack in Bestwood on November 25.

Throughout October and November 2023, Burrell engaged in a pattern of abuse, including destroying property belonging to the woman and bombarding her with threatening text messages when she attempted to leave him. The victim eventually found the courage to contact the authorities, leading to Burrell’s arrest and subsequent confession to charges of causing grievous bodily harm and engaging in controlling and coercive behavior.

In a personal impact statement, the woman expressed the ongoing trauma and fear she experiences as a result of Burrell’s actions. Detective Sergeant Stacey Hardstaff of Nottinghamshire Police condemned Burrell’s behavior, labeling him as a “nasty bully” who used threats and violence to manipulate and control his partner. Hardstaff also commended the victim for her bravery in coming forward to report the abuse.

Burrell was issued a five-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the woman following his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court on May 22. The hope is that the punishment serves as a form of justice for the victim and encourages others who may be experiencing similar situations to seek help and report domestic abuse to the authorities. Support and assistance are available for those in need of help, and law enforcement is ready to respond promptly to ensure the safety of individuals in such circumstances.
