Ocean City, New Jersey—A 26-year-old woman who previously worked for U.S. Representative Jeff Van Drew faces criminal charges for allegedly fabricating a violent attack on herself, according to a federal complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Natalie Greene is accused of orchestrating the incident that involved self-inflicted injuries, which she falsely reported as the work of politically motivated assailants.
Greene is charged with one count of conspiracy to provide false statements and another for making false statements to federal officials. Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba confirmed the charges, underscoring the serious nature of the allegations against her.
In an official statement, Van Drew expressed his dismay over the developments, stating that while Greene’s tenure with his office had ended, his thoughts were with her as she seeks the care she requires. This incident has sent ripples through the community, raising concerns about the implications of such false claims, especially regarding political discourse.
According to the complaint, on July 23, a suspected accomplice called emergency services to report that Greene had been attacked by three men who were aware of her association with Van Drew. The 911 caller alleged that the men had threatened them, claiming to possess a firearm, leading them to fear for their safety.
When local police arrived at the Egg Harbor Township Nature Preserve, they discovered Greene lying on the ground with her hands and feet bound by zip ties. Visible on her body were extensive lacerations and derogatory phrases written on her skin, including “Trump Whore.” Greene was promptly taken to a hospital for medical attention.
Following the incident, police conducted searches that led to the discovery of additional zip ties and duct tape in Greene’s vehicle, raising suspicions about the authenticity of her claims. Investigators later reviewed her mobile device location data, which indicated she had visited a Pennsylvania body modification artist prior to the alleged attack.
Further scrutiny revealed a troubling prelude to the incident, as a search for “zip ties near me” was conducted using the accomplice’s phone just two days before. Surveillance footage from a nearby Dollar General store captured the accomplice shortly after the online search, although it did not definitively show a purchase of zip ties.
During subsequent interrogations with the FBI, Greene continued to insist that she had been attacked, citing various forms of hate directed toward Van Drew’s office that she claimed had escalated. She detailed supposed threats, including a recent incident involving suspicious powder sent through the mail.
As authorities gathered more evidence, they interviewed the body modification artist and obtained receipts confirming a $500 payment from Greene, along with images identical to her injuries documented at the hospital. These findings considerably undermined her narrative surrounding the alleged attack.
The unfolding case highlights not only the complexities of relationships in the political arena but also the potential ripple effects of misleading information on public perception. As the legal proceedings continue, many within the community and beyond await answers regarding the motivations behind Greene’s actions.
