Convicted Sacramento Gang Member Faces 74 Years to Life for Greyhound Bus Shooting

Oroville, California – Asaahdi Coleman, the individual responsible for a fatal shooting incident aboard a Greyhound bus in Oroville in 2022, has been found guilty of second-degree murder. The Butte County District Attorney, Mike Ramsey, disclosed in a news release on Thursday that Coleman, a Sacramento native, was convicted of second-degree murder and attempted murder with firearm enhancements. The jury also acquitted him of three counts of attempted murder, while the release identified Coleman as a member of a Sacramento gang.

During the trial, Ramsey revealed that Coleman’s defense attorney argued that Coleman’s unspecified mental illness hindered his ability to form an intent to kill, alleging that he shot at individuals in front of him without the intention to kill. Ramsey stated that Coleman faces a potential sentence of up to 74 years to life in prison and may be eligible for parole after 25 years due to California’s 2019 Youthful Offender Parole law. Coleman’s sentencing is scheduled for May 31, to be determined by Judge Corie Carraway.

The tragic incident occurred on February 2, 2022, when Coleman opened fire on a Greyhound bus, resulting in the death of 43-year-old Karin Dolton. Additionally, he injured an 11-year-old girl, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, a 32-year-old man, and a 38-year-old man during the shooting spree.

The verdict of second-degree murder against Coleman underscores the gravity of the violent act committed on the Greyhound bus, bringing closure to the victims and their families. The conviction reflects the commitment of law enforcement and the judicial system to hold individuals accountable for their actions and ensure justice is served in such cases.

Ramsey’s statement regarding Coleman’s potential sentencing highlights the severity of the penalties he faces for his criminal acts. The upcoming court proceedings on May 31 will provide an opportunity for the judge to consider the full extent of the harm caused by Coleman’s actions and deliver a just sentence in accordance with the law.

Overall, the conviction of Asaahdi Coleman serves as a reminder of the consequences of senseless violence and the importance of upholding the principles of justice and accountability in our society. The tragic loss of life and injuries resulting from his actions underscore the need for measures to prevent such incidents in the future and to ensure the safety and security of all individuals in our communities.
