Corrections Deputy Killed in Tragic Opelousas Shooting Incident, Sheriff’s Office Seeks Justice

Opelousas, Louisiana – An tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night in Opelousas, resulting in the death of an off-duty St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office corrections deputy. Chanterria “Mackey” Albert, 23, tragically lost her life at an Opelousas hospital after being involved in a shooting on the 1100 block of Park Avenue. Fortunately, Albert and another individual sustained injuries but are currently in stable condition.

Reports of gunfire on Park Avenue prompted a swift response from law enforcement officers around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. By the time authorities arrived at the scene, both victims had already been transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

Acknowledging the sorrowful news, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Department officially confirmed Wednesday morning that the deceased deputy was one of their own. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz expressed his grief in a statement, denouncing the senseless act of gun violence that took place in Opelousas the previous night.

In light of the tragic event, the Sheriff’s Office pledged its full support to the Opelousas Police Department (OPD) in apprehending the perpetrator. Meanwhile, OPD continues to conduct an ongoing investigation into the shooting to bring those responsible to justice.

Albert, who had joined the force on May 10, 2022, served alongside her mother, Deputy Cherikas Albert.
