Courage Emerges Amid Chaos: Heroic Bystander Recalls Taking Down Shooter at Rhode Island Hockey Game

Pawtucket, Rhode Island – A harrowing incident unfolded during a high school hockey match on Monday when gunfire erupted, leaving two fatalities and prompting swift action from bystanders. One of those who intervened, Michael Black, recounted his experience of confronting the shooter amid chaos.

The disturbance occurred just after 2:30 p.m., when the atmosphere shifted dramatically as nearly a dozen shots rang out. Spectators, including families gathered to enjoy the game, quickly scrambled for safety. Black was watching the match with his wife when he suddenly heard the shots, describing an immediate sense of panic.

In the midst of the confusion, Black spotted Robert Dorgan, 56, the alleged shooter, reportedly wielding a firearm. He recalled a moment of instinct as he watched his wife flee. “Once she was out of my line of sight, I jumped down from the bleachers and charged at the shooter,” Black said.

As he engaged with Dorgan, Black’s hand became caught in the weapon’s chamber, effectively preventing further firing. Yet, the situation escalated when the suspect attempted to access a second gun. “I remember the panic on his face as he aimed at me,” Black noted.

Tragically, Dorgan eventually turned the gun on himself, resulting in his death alongside that of his ex-wife Rhonda and their adult son Aiden, who were both victims of the attack. Mayor Donald Grebien praised the bravery of those who intervened, stating their actions helped avert even greater harm during such a distressing event.

Authorities confirmed that the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute, revealing the connection between Dorgan and the victims. Black, shaken but relieved that he could help, later discussed his reunion with his wife amid the aftermath of the chaos. “She told me she was proud of what I did but was also angry,” he said, reflecting on their emotional encounter.

In the wake of this tragic event, the community is grappling with the implications of gun violence, as residents come to terms with the loss and the courage displayed during the crisis.
